Squeezebox Server

Added by Jan-Peter Koopmann over 3 years ago

Hi,

as mentioned in another thread I would love to use NexentaStor for my new NAS. However I need to run a Squeezebox Server on the NAS as well. One way would be to use VirtualBox and Debian on the NAS. On the other hand, Squeezebox server is perl only. Should it not be possible to run it in NexentaOS straight forward? There should be root access to NexentaOS somehow or is there none?

Regards, JP

You can run it in NexentaOS or at least you can try and provide feedback about your research. If you want root access you need to enable expert_mode, after that you can go to UNIX shell. Follow NMC'c commands shows you how you can do it:

  1. nmc# option expert_mode=1 -s
  2. nmc# !bash

Actually I have the same demand. Any experiences meanwhile?

So, I gave it a trial but it doesn't work.

Finally it says: "Unsupported platform: SunOS, please submit a patch or provide us with access to a development system."

Well, maybe somebody will provide a plug-in sometimes.

Or you could just run squeezebox virtualized? I seem to recall people have gotten virtualbox working on nexenta? Or am I misremembering?

Squeezebox server (now called Logitech Media Server) has dependencies on a lot of libraries, e.g. MySQL. I run mine on a LinkStation NAS, which is a fairly common platform but still has its difficulties. Of course all the 3rd party dependencies will be open source and so probably available for Solaris x86 so if you've got time on your hands and looking for a challenge you might be able to get it working. If so the best place for your discussions will be at [[http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php?18-3rd-Party-Hardware]].

Don't forget though if you change the NexentaStor OS you may break something and find that upgrades stop working. Personally I think it's more trouble than it's worth - NexentaStor's strengths are that it's reliable and self-contained.

Instead I think I'd be considering a low power device like a LinkStation (current ones take only about 9W and are cheap) or even a Raspberry Pi (e.g. here is squeezeslave: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=79965#p79965 but I imagine someone will have LMS running on it soon, if not already).
