LSI SAS 9211-8i Boot Order
Added by Nick Adams about 1 year ago
I am new to the forum and NexentaStor so I appologize if this is posted elsewhere, but I spent some time searching this forum and the web with no answers. I recently purchased a Supermicro CSE-216E26-R1200LPB chassis, and an LSI SAS 9211-8i. I flahsed the LSI with the IT firmware version 7.23.01.00 - SAS2BIOS_Phase12.0. When I attempt to install NexentaStor Community Edition 3.1.2 and select the first two disks for sys volmes; they end up being disk 17 and 18 in my 0-23 disk chassis. Is there a way to set the drive boot order under the LSI BIOS or the NexentaStor install so the first disk listed in the installer is drive 0 and so on? Thanks in advance!

This is a backplane issue. I have the SC216E1 and the order is not 0-23 left to right.
I'd suggest reading your SC216 manual to find the proper order of how the backplane lays out drives..

Thanks for the reply Ryan. I did look at the manual again, but I do not see anything that lends a clue. I disabled onboard SATA and a few other things in the BIOS to see if they were conflicting with the LSI BIOS. I also disabled Boot Support in the LSI BIOS with no change. I purchased this LSI SAS 9211-8i to replace a AOC-SAS2LP-H8iR for NexenaStor. The AOC RAID card was able to read the drives in the correct order. Any suggestions?

errm maybe it's an LSI issue then.
I know my chassis ended up going something like this
[7 - 0][15 - 8][23 - 16]there are 3 segments of 8 on that chassis and i'm running 9211-4i's (two of them in MPXIO)

Can you confirm this problem without the backplane? Last year I ran into the same trouble while setting my first NexentaStor SAN with a LSI 9211-8i controller. I even changed the labelling on the breakout cable from the card! Then I contacted LSI support and they sent me a "beta" bios for the card and it was back to normal... maybe this issue is back with the latest firmware.

We found the same issue and simply plugged the 2 boot disks into the SATA interfaces on the motherboard. The disks were 2.5" and we had a couple of those rubber holders. The case easily held the disks in the bottom on the inside.

Sorry for the delay guys. I just purchased a pair of LSI SAS9200-8E 's. I placed my mobo in a CSE-825TQ-R720LPB chassis and installed a pair of Intel 520 60 GB SSDs to boot from my LSI 9211-8i. This makes it easy to install as I know the SSD's are my bootdisk (as Craig mentioned). I added the extra chassis above the CSE-216E26-R1200LPB as I want to install 4 more SSD's for l2arc and zil. I installed the latest IT firmware on all three cards, but there was no change on the original issue. Thanks for the input Patrick.
