SATA Controller Card

Added by Robin Barlow about 1 year ago

I'm planning on setting up a Nexentastor server and need a few extra SATA ports for hard drives. I found a controller card on Kijiji (see link below) which says it's compatible with PC and Mac as long as you have the right drivers. Are there generic drivers that Nexenta uses to access the additional ports on expansion cards or will this not work for me?

When looking for controller cards stay away from the cheap SATA chips (some 20$ ones will not even work) and the expensive RAID controllers; check the Nexenta HCL. I've had the best success with the LSI (1068E, 2008,...) chip based cards. For something inexpensive check out the IBM BR10i. You can find these for around 50$. I've seen an overall 30% performance increase (LSI1068e) from the cheap SATA controllers to the slightly more expensive SAS HBAs.
