Disk recommendations.

Added by Andres Gonzalez about 1 year ago

Hello,

I have a doubt regarding hardware with NexentaStor,

  • Is worth using Enterprise SATA drives instead of SATA? (planning for example an storage with 10 disks)
  • What devices are recommended for use with ZIL?

Best regards.

I'm using WD Sata (non-enterprise, AAKS) drives and they've been working fine. I run 6 in a RAIDZ and 2 in a RAID1 setup.

If you want to go with enterprisey stuff I'd rather choose NL SAS over Enterprise SATA. The difference in mechanics is almost non-existent between Ent. SATA and NL SAS: You get SATA mechanics with better SAS signaling.

In terms of ZIL: "It depends". If you look at what kind of SSDs are sold as ZIL in commercial offerings - drives with capacitors - are still highly priced compared to normal SSDs. That's because a ZIL has to be more reliable than L2ARC. If you want to go with a ZIL, do mirrored ones to be on the safer side. - In case you loose one log devices and the bus doesn't freak out, you are on the safer side.

Intel X25-E are good for a ZIL.
