Configuration question for zfs pool/hardware change

Added by Paul Karlson about 1 year ago

Currently I'm running a CE of nexentastor on a 1950 and md3000 and it's been running great for 8 months. It's mainly a third tier to our compellent and runs some light iscsi vm datastore stuff along with being a target for our various backup systems.

I just got my hands on another md3000 and wanted to attach it to our current pool of mirrored drives. However I was wondering if I should try arranging things around so I re-create my pool with mirrors happening between the two enclosures.

Each enclosure would have something like 12 x sas 15k drives and 2 nearline 2TB sas drives. And one slot for hot spare.

Seems nice to know that in the rare case an entire enclosure goes down, I could keep rolling along on the other one. However I wanted to check here and see if there might be anything I'm missing with regards to performance issues with doing this.

Any thoughts?

Yes, that's how i would do it... you should actually see some perf improvement as the number of vdevs will double.
